Most of you who have been to Beef O'Brady's for "Friday Night Karaoke" have had the pleasure of hearing Erika and Reggie sing. If you happened to make it to Karaoke on Dec 4th, 2009, you may have seen them sing a Disco Song with Erika's Father. In the words of Paul Harvey, "Now . . .Here's the rest of the story . . ."
* * * *
Erika's Father was the lead singer of The Trammps, the Grammy Award Winning 1970's Disco band from Philadelphia who had 10 albums, multiple hits and was included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in 1977. Unfortunately, he is now suffering from Alzheimer's and has taken a pretty severe downturn in the last year and a half. Today, He doesn't remember the glory days of his many years as a rock star. He doesn't know that he was the artist they called "The Man with the Golden Voice." He doesn't even recognize the friends and family who spend day and night by his side. But when music fills a room, the fog seems to lift, his mind focuses and a joy fills his soul. Erika told me, "It is as if a light comes on in his eyes when he hears music, and while he may not remember he was the one who made " Disco Inferno" one of the most recognized songs in pop history, he somehow still remembers the lyrics and that he loves the song." This is a video I shot of Erika, her husband, Reggie, and Erika's Father singing "Disco Inferno" at Beef O'Brady's in Fort Mill, SC. At the end of the song, the KJ, TRY, played a video of The Trammps playing another one of their hits during a PBS special that was only filmed about two 1/2 years ago and you can see Erika trying to explain to her Father that the man on the screen is him (at approx. 5 minutes and 04 seconds in the video). Later that night, I was actually moved to tears when I came home and realized what I had caught on my digital camera: A scene cut out of the life of a family whose world has been turned upside-down by this tragic disease and how music and love can find glimpses of normality in the middle of what can often seem hopeless. - JB
